Ridge Roberts
World Champion Fiddler on a c ourse to a New Star
At age seven, Ridge Roberts soaked in the sights and sounds as his papa played the old-time fiddle tunes in their Granbury home . John Roberts sat knee – to – knee and soul-to-soul with his third son and knew immediately the light shining in this boy’s eyes would light the fire, a life – long love for music. “I knew Ridge had an exceptional gift,” John shared. “ H is interest in playing, his love for the history of the fiddle and especially Texas-style playing were extraordinary .” Cindy Roberts’ smile grows when she speaks of any of their three sons. “ From th e first lesson with John , Ridge breathed the fiddle ,” Cindy recalled. He researched fiddle players and tunes, concentrating on the old Texas – style fiddlers. He s ea r ch ed for fiddle music from fiddle legend and then earned the tunes by ear. He quickly surpassed what his Papa could teach him, so ‘Uncle Robin’, a family friend, took up where Papa left off. Recognizing that Ridge would soon surpass him, Uncle Robin knew that Ridge needed a good fiddle teacher to take over. ” Ridge’s interest, his parents, fate, or perhaps the Creator of all great fiddlers led him to enter his first fiddle contest in Alvarado at the age of ten. There , fiddle teacher Michelle Kuhlman recognized Ridge’s raw talent and she introduced him me to her friend, Joey McKenzie, fiddle and rhythm guitar legend . This began a special friendship bound by their mutual passion for the fiddle. Under God’s direction and Joey McKenzie ’s mentoring , Ridge’s amazing talent and work ethic have made him the professional musician he is today.
